I’ve fought it several years in a row. I’ve never been one to jump on a bandwagon, to do something just because everyone else is doing it. And while I’ve considered it in the past, I’ve always shied away from choosing a word of the year.
And this year was no exception. I’ve read many a blog post in which people claimed their word for 2013. Words like Grace, and Zest, and Secure, and New, and…
Perhaps the hesitation comes from knowing that I could easily choose any one of those words and it would be appropriate for the upcoming year. And so I purposed to not choose just one word.
It was Monday morning, not too early, but early enough that I wasn’t quite functioning yet.
My voice was still groggy and my eyes still glassy with sleepiness. My cheeks flushed with warmth from snuggling under a quilt with The Professor.
As I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror, toothbrush in hand…the only sign that I was awake, really…one word pounded in my ears, echoing over and over again in a silent unspoken prayer.
Rooted.
Lord I want to be rooted in You. Rooted in the truth of Your Word. Rooted in the grace that was poured out on the sinner’s tree. Oh God, let my marriage be rooted in unconditional, sacrificing love that reflects Your covenantal love to Your people. Let my life be rooted in the knowledge and understanding that You have a divinely-appointed purpose for me. I pray that my relationships are rooted in grace and forgiveness. I pray that my business is rooted in integrity and honor.
Prayers, inward utterances from somewhere within me. Billowing forth before I was even consciously aware of it.
And one word.
Rooted.
Not only my word for the year, but also my prayer.

I’ve heard so many gals posting about their word for 2013. I have no idea what mine will be for the upcoming year but I have a feeling a lot is about to change! …maybe “adjustment” would be appropriate?
Adjustment could work for me too!
Thanks for linking up!
Ah! That verse seems so perfect for you and this place the Lord has brought you to right now…just embracing your story with courage and boldness in sharing the pieces He’s prompted you to offer up. Love it. Perfect. Rooted means not being tossed by the storms, knowing our feet are on a rock. Don’t we all want that? Good word.
Thank you Leslie!
I am so thankful that God has finally given me my voice, and a passion to tell my story. Even though the story is painful, and not the one I would have wanted to share. But HE is SO faithful to give me the words every. single. time. I sit down to write. I want to be rooted in HIS faithfulness.
Rooted really is such a powerful word. I love it in reference to Psalm 1.
Danette I thought about that verse as well. I almost put that scripture on the print, but I really like Ephesians too.
I have linked up my first post of the day to your linky! Another link up to follow later today. My word for 2013 is “Soar!”
Have a great day!
Sarah @ A Cat-Like Curiosity
love this!
Oh I love it. I love how the word chose you. Or how He chose it for you, speaking it clearly into your heart. Excited to follow along your journey in 2013. blessings -lauren
grateful.
ps – thanks for the link love
He really did choose it for me!
I think “rooted” is a great word to keep in your heart!
Mine is “action.” I want to keep that in the forefront of my mind as I walk through this year. Link here>>

Action is a good word too. Kind of intimidating to me!!
Love you lady!
I love your word and your prayer. Your printables are so encouraging. This one is a gorgeous testament to how we all should be living. I love it!
Thank you for giving us little pieces of your heart!
Xoxo
Megan
OH Megs.
Thank you! I’m glad you like the print.
My word of the year is similar to yours: “In” . . . . IN Christ; IN due time; IN season/out of season; branch IN the vine; speaking the truth IN love. You get the picture.
Lovely graphic. I like it a lot.
Mom, have you read A Holy Experience? That’s her word of the year too!
Yes my dear! That is a fabulous verse and word for the year! Sometimes jumping on the bandwagon is just where you need to be
Sometimes
Rooted…..I will be pondering that today! Happy Thursday to you!
Haha! I know, right? Bandwagons aren’t all bad.
Rooted… I love that word and everything that your goals for this year encompass with that. I, too, picked a word for this year BOLD. YIKes… scary for me but something I feel that God is pulling me toward more and more. Thanks for the encouragement! Blessings to you this year!
I like BOLD, Sarah. In fact, I was just thinking about how important it is to blog with boldness. And also, how hard it is…
Ive not the word of the year thing. I have made goals and such, but not the word of the year. I like the idea, though. I like your word. Rooted. So good. I love the printable too. (Just pinned it to share). I also added my own link and tweeted. ♥
Thank you for pinning, Maria!!
Love this! And the printable…thank you!! And thank you for the chance to link-up!!
Thanks Nancy!
I’m glad you joined us!
Amanda
I really love this word! It is so powerful. I have chosen the word TRUST for this year, because I have started to realize that I have been letting fear rule me and plague me. The verses in Matthew 8, 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and lthere was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”, have been rolling around in my head a lot and I have decided to trust the maker and calmer of the storm so that I can be marveled by him
I love the printable and cannot wait to print it and hang it where I can see it
Cheers to being rooted in Christ this year!
I’ve thought back on 2012, and Trust could totally have been my word for last year.
I couldn’t have made it without trust.
I’d be SO honored for that printable to be in your home! WOW!
The problem with me is that I have MANY words I want to aim for in 2013. I can’t decide on one word. :/
Sarah Jane, I that was one of the reasons I wasn’t planning on picking ONE.
And then it just sort of came to me when I wasn’t even expecting it.
Rooted is such a powerful word. Good for you. May God bless you this year with deeper roots in Him.
Thank you Donna. It’s my prayer that my roots do go deeper!
Thanks for the download. That is beautiful!
You’re so welcome, Kenya! I’m glad you like it!
Oh, I’ve never done a word for the year… but I think it’s a really great idea! I believe I will think on it tonight and then do a post and link up to you tomorrow sometime. Love the “rooted” theme and the printout – thanks
Yay! That’s great, Kelly! Can’t wait to see what word you choose!
First time linker, here.
I love your word! And the prayer. This is the first year that I did a word. Okay, words. I know, I chose 3. I couldn’t just pick one. And I like my 3, I do. But then I see others’ words. And I want to have 7 words. No 27!
And that’s why one of my words is “clarify.” And another one is “content.”
Have a great week!
You chose three??? Maybe I’ll remember to do that next year.
Yeah, well, next year I’m probably going to have to remember to choose just one!
Beautiful post and spectacular word for 2013. I, too, have seen many bloggers share their “word of 2013″ but I’ve not selected one for myself. This Scripture also reminds me of the work I’ve been doing with my students this week as they write goal letters to themselves. I keep telling him, encouraging them, to think bigger, deeper, and wider. It’ll be neat for them to read these goal letters next January (2014) and see what they’ve accomplished and how far they’ve matured/grown in a year’s time.
Blessings, Friend. =)
I really like the idea of writing a goal letter. That is a great way to both inspire and hold them accountable! I bet you’re an awesome teacher!
Hey Amanda,
I came by to look through the other bloggers who linked up and I couldn’t find the link party. =( Is it just my computer or did something go wrong so that the collection is no longer showing?
Alesha
Oh…and btw…I like your word choice! This is the first year I’ve done it as well and if I had done it last year, I probably would have picked the same word then. I picked “Filled” because I want to live daily out of a filling of the Holy Spirit inside me. I want to have that constant connection to the source of strength and life, Jesus.
It wasn’t you! InLinkz had a problem with the original code and I had to use the back up code. You can link up now!
Am so inspired that I went ahead and linked even though it’s not Thursday.
Still contemplating my oneword365 but I’m thinking invested
Thanks for linking up, Nicole!
Okay, I chose my word and blogged about it
Tried to link up, but don’t think it’s working. Have a great weekend!
Kelly! Thanks for letting me know! InLinkz had some problems, but it’s fixed now. I hope you’ll link up!
I hadn’t heard of this word for the year thing until recently on Lauren and MercyInk’s blog. I have had a theme lately myself of what God is doing in me and have considered blogging about it. We shall see:)
I wasn’t planning to blog about it, but the Lord really laid it on my heart!
